22 killed, many injured in a stampede that broke out on a bridge near Mumbai's Elphinstone Road station. The injured have been taken to KEM hospital and other hospitals in the locality.
According to witnesses, 4 trains arrived at the same time, which led to an increased crowd. Senior police officials are at the scene and are investigating into the tragedy.
PM Narendra Modi tweeted saying "Situation in Mumbai is being continuously monitored." Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is in Mumbai taking stock of the situation.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the relatives of the deceased, and said that medical expenses of the injured will be borne by the government.
Angry commuters complained about the bridge being too old, narrow and not strong enough to handle busy crowds. "It was a disaster waiting to happen," a local said.
