Politicians speak on Sachin Tendulkars nomination to Rajya Sabha

The President has approved Sachin Tendulkar's name as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had written to the President with the government's recommendations. The nomination has invited reactions from various political personalities.

Mulayam Singh Yadav: I am happy with Sachin's nomination. He is nice man and famous personality of the nation. What party will he be supporting depends on him.

Rajiv Shukla, Congress: We are trying to honour good people in parliament. It is kind of honour for him. This move should be welcomed. People should not politicise the matter. I would not like to comment on the people who see politics behind nomination.

Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena: Whether or not the Congress gives Tendulkar a Rajya Sabha seat or not, it is between them. I do not want to comment.

Sudip Bandhopadhyay, Trinamool Congress: We welcome the Sachin's nomination. We are also demanding Bharat Ratna for him. Selection of Sachin Tendulkar is great decision. His nomination is completely justified.

Gurudas Dasgupta, CPI (M): Sachin's nomination is a real recognisation of sports talent.
