Voting is underway in state assemblies and in Parliament House to elect the next President of India; 4896 legislators - 776 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs and 4,120 MLAs - will vote till 5 pm today.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi voted to elect India's new president on Thursday. The ruling UPA has worked hard to gather together the support of its allies, friends and even some opposition parties to support its candidate, Mr Mukherjee.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cast his ballot in the 14th Presidential election. Singh also waved at the group of cameramen covering the elections.
Rahul Gandhi voted to elect India's new president on Thursday. Rahul Gandhi has told NDTV that he will play a "more pro-active role in the party and the government."

Voting for presidential election 2012 is underway. Besides the Congress and now all its allies, four supporting parties, the Samajwadi Party (SP), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Lalu Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Janata Dal (Secular) have said they will vote for Mr Mukherjee.
The electoral college is made up of all MPs and MLAs in the country - those 4896 lawmakers who are voting today. Each MLA vote has a designated value depending on which state he or she belongs to.
