The tale of a temple

I have stood at this spot for over 3000 years. I may not be on any regular tourist map. I may not have proper roads or signages guiding anyone towards me. Don't go by my outward appearance. Looks could not be more deceptive, even if I may say so myself.

If my unconventional circular structure has not got you inquisitive then I am disappointed, but not heartbroken. Step inside is all I have to say to you.

Does what meets your eye surprise you? Does it remind you of some other, more prominent landmark? Is your head going – where have I seen something like this before – a circular complex with pillars encircling a central structure?

Hold the thought. Let me welcome you to the Chausath Yogini Temple in Mitawali. Chausath meaning 64, and that is how many rooms you will find in my circular corridor structure. The central structure is a Shiva temple. You will find many sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses on my interior and exterior walls.

I may be away from the buzz of tourists and shutterbugs, but who knows amongst the many wandering travelers who have landed up in my courtyard in all these years - there may have been the designer and builders of the Indian Parliament House in New Delhi.

They say that its architecture is very much like mine. Do you think so too?

You can reach me by road from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. I am less than an hour and 40 kilometers away from Gwalior. You will find me sitting on top of a hill that you will have to trek up.
