This World Environment Day,the cities undertook a massive waste management campaign and pledged to adopt the two bin system following the launch of source segregation awareness campaign that also aims to improve door to door waste collection across India.

M Venkaiah Naidu, Urban Development Minister, launched a mega waste management drive in Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi on the World Environment Day 2017. Delhi along with other nine urban bodies of the Nation Capital saw a massive waste management movement on June 5.

Two Bin System was inaugurated by Mr Naidu at the launch event. The green bin will be for biodegradable waste and the blue bin for non-biodegradable waste.He said ,"Segregation of waste at source helps in waste to compost, waste to energy and recycling. This way we will help in decreasing load from our dying landfills."

On the World Environment Day, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation distributed bins in three wards, covering 4000 households. The Urban Development Minister also flagged off vehicles following the guidelines which says that municipal corporations and local bodies will only collect segregated wastes from households.

Indore was the second city where the massive source segregation drive was launched by M Venakaiah Naidu. The programme was to propagate the Two-Bin segregation system. "We wanted to celebrate World Environment Day in the cleanest city of India and so we chose Indore," said Mr Naidu.

A program on Source Segregation was organised in Visakhapatnam on the occasion of World Environment Day. The blue and green bins were distributed and swachhta pledge was taken by Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation workers. A beach cleanup campaign was also conducted by GVMC at various beaches in Visakhapatnam.
