  • In semis ahead of 2014 polls, BJP wins big, but AAP steals the show

The 2013 assembly polls, billed as semi-finals ahead of the 2014 national election, delivered a 4-1 win for the BJP - the party won absolute majority in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and was the single-largest party though shy of a clear majority in Delhi. Mauled in these states, the Congress only had a consolation victory in Mizoram.

The show-stopper of the elections, however, was taxman-turned-activist-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal and his year-old Aam Aadmi Party that made a stunning political debut by winning 28 of Delhi's 70 seats, second only to the BJP, but eight short of a majority. The AAP will form a government in Delhi with external support from the Congress and Mr Kejriwal as the new Chief Minister.

The Congress, which had begun the year on a good note by wresting from the BJP its only state in the south, Karnataka, and retaining power in Meghalaya, acknowledged that there was a lesson to be learnt from the "Aam Aadmi Party phenomenon." (Assembly Elections 2013: Complete Coverage)
