Train services have been hit after a major snag on the Central Railways' suburban line in Mumbai. The delay led to widespread protests from angry commuters who stopped trains and pelted stones at the police which struck the crowd with sticks to contain the protest.

One motorman was injured in the protests and two vehicles set on fire.
The protests began after a train approaching a station came to a standstill after an overhead wire reportedly snapped. As the train came to a standstill, the schedule was thrown into disarray, with huge delays.
Passengers at Diva station in Thane say they are fed up with the frequent breakdown of services on the Central Line.

By noon, trains were still not running on time. Headquartered at Mumbai's iconic Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), formerly known as Victoria Terminus, the Central Railway runs suburban services from CST to Kalyan and onwards.
