Uttarakhand Elections: Issues that matter

As polling for assembly elections in the hill state draws near, there are a number of issues the BJP has to face from possible infighting to the power situation in the state. But the Congress will not find it a walkover either.

  • As election fever grips the state, the main issue will be that of corruption. It is expected to be a straight fight between the two main national parties - the Congress and the BJP.
  • Chief minister BC Khanduri has leaned on Anna Hazare in his battle with the Congress. He has also passed the anti-corruption Lokpal Bill in the state.
  • The Congress, meanwhile, will be hoping that the delimitation exercise will work to its favour in the elections. In the new arrangement, representation of Haridwar, Dehradun and Udham Singh Nagar will increase, while that of the remaining ten districts will decrease.
  • Power and water supply will also be key issues in the hill state. Resentment has grown among the people about five-six hour long power cuts during the day. The Congress will be hoping to use this issue to their advantage.
  • The BJP will also be hoping that the plethora of chief ministerial candidates will not lead to infighting. Despite the show of bonhomie between Khanduri and former chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, sources claim that the two do not get along. This could hurt the party in the lead up to the polls.
