Politicians, dignitaries and film stars descended upon the capital today for the swearing-in ceremony of India's Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi.
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in New Delhi this morning. This is the first time since Independence that a leader from either India or Pakistan will be attending his counterpart's inauguration. Mr Sharif also told NDTV that he and Mr Modi could could help turn new page in relations between the two countries. -
Actor Salman Khan checked into the capital's Taj Mahal Hotel. Salman participated in Gujarat's kite flying festival or Uttarayan in January as a guest of Mr Modi who also gave him lunch.

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai flew into New Delhi.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived amid protests by MDMK chief Vaiko who is an ally of the National Democratic Alliance. Mr Rajapaksa's presence has also reportedly kept away Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who is known to be on good terms with Mr Modi.

Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has also been invited for the swearing-in ceremony. Nepal and India are both members of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
