You've got faith

A traveller's account of visiting different kinds of religious places.

  • In India, as even the worldover, religion draws maximum debate, discussion, tourist traffic. I remember being surprised to see more churches than Rome in Russia - the erstwhile land of Socialism.

So as a traveller I have visited all kinds of religious places. I am not religious but I believe. I have faith.
  • I believe that the concept of Seva that Sikhism imbibes is admirable. It is not just about the langar - the free food service. The volunteers, who clean the Gurdwara or man the shoe counter for the fellow pilgrims - truly admirable.
  • The belief in karma that Bhagwat Gita talks about is the biggest learning for me. It is most relevant now when sometimes the lines between good and bad get muddled and decisions between what should one do gets tougher. Just do what is right and don't worry about the results. Simple and relevant for any generation.
  • Having grown up in Convent school, between praying in chapels, singing hymns, christmas carols and moral science classes - that one really didn't care about - somewhere now when I look back, it all adds up. Honesty is the best policy that was drilled into our heads. It held true then it holds true now.
  • But aren't these messages true and common for all faiths? No religion teaches you to be dishonest, pick the evil over good or says selflessly serving others is forbidden. Hence, I have faith not in any particular religion but in what they stand for.
