Pune:
When a young advertising executive in Pune came face to face with the men who had allegedly dragged her out of a car by her hair and beaten her, they told her, "No girl from our family would wear short clothes and accompany men at 5 in the morning."
Three of the men who allegedly assaulted her have been arrested.
The 22-year-old woman says for a week, the police refused to file a formal police case or FIR. It was only after she approached a senior police officer that action was taken.
Rashmi Shukla, the city's police commissioner, told NDTV "We are taking action" against a trio of cops that did not register the case.
On May 1, the ad executive was driving home with two male friends. When their car stopped at a traffic light, five men from a car waiting next to them began harassing the 22-year-old woman and shouting abuses at her. They quickly surrounded the car.
The woman says that in a split second, through an open window, the gang grabbed her hair to pull her out of the car, then beat her up on the road in front of her apartment building.
"I was with my friends and they started teasing us and when my friends asked them to stop, they followed us to my home and then abused and beat us up before leaving the spot," the woman told NDTV today. Her friends had been battered on their faces.
The group of five men then came back five minutes later and threatened the woman, who was frantically calling family members and neighbours for help on her cellphone.
"They told me that they know my home and could find me later. They said we could complain to whoever we want to, but they are well- connected and nothing would happen to them," she said.
There is no security camera footage of the crime.
