Pune:
The Bombay high court has ordered those applying for permission to cut a tree to furnish specific details of the locations where three new trees will be planted. The applicants must also maintain the new trees for two years.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by city-based activists, Vinod Jain and Deepak Vahikar. This was revealed by the activists at a press conference held here on Friday. Demanding that the municipal administration follow the court's instructions, Jain said justices DY Chandrachud and Anoop Mohta passed the order on their PIL on November 24.
The court said the new trees should belong to a local species and a plan be annexed to the undertaking earmarking the places in which the trees would be replanted.
It also ordered that the replanted trees must not be small saplings, but half-grown trees of a size sufficient to ensure their survival.
The court laid down that the applicants will continue to maintain the replanted trees for a period of two years after the plantation.
