Pune: A family from Dhankavdi was shocked when the groom did not turn up for the wedding of their youngest daughter on Saturday.
Repeated attempts by the family members to contact the groom, an IT engineer at a Marathi daily in the city, failed. The bride's father, Suresh Hanumant Konde (51), then rushed to the groom's house, only to find the door locked. He lodged a complaint at the Sahakarnagar police station against the groom, identified as Shwetang Jagtap (28).
The bride's elder brother, Hemant, said, "Fifteen days ago, Jagtap's mother demanded Rs3 lakh for purchasing furniture. We were unable to meet the demand. But two days ago, when the groom came home for dinner, he assured my sister of marriage. He dropped a hint that his parents may keep away from the marriage. I suspect Jagtap has been kidnapped by his own family members."
Senior inspector Bajirao Bhosale of Sahakarnagar police station said the police have registered an FIR against Jagtap, his father Sharad (55) and mother Meena (50) of Kondhwa-Khurd. "Konde's 25-year-old daughter's wedding was to be held at Vinkar Sabhagruha in Dhankavdi on Saturday, but the groom did not turn up," he said.
Sub inspector Tejaswini Yadav, who is investigating the case, said, "We have booked a case of cheating and act done by them with a common intention. As Konde booked the marriage hall, catering and made all other arrangements, it is an economic loss."
