Hotels, malls may have to pay cleanliness tax

Pune: The standing committee of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Wednesday proposed to levy 2% special cleanliness tax on commercial establishments like malls, hotels, marriage halls, hospitals and lodges that do not provide toilets facilities for the public. The panel also approved the proposal to double the entertainment tax.

PCMC standing committee chairman Prashant Shitole told media persons, "The PCMC had taken a policy decision regarding special cleanliness tax. The special cleanliness tax which was earlier imposed only on residential buildings not having toilet facility, would now be imposed on malls, lodges, hotels, hospitals and marriage halls."

The committee also rejected the proposal to hike the fees charged for various certificates issued by the civic body by 5%. The committee has approved substantial increase in entertainment tax for cinema halls and auditoriums for 2011-12. However, citizens would be able to watch Marathi films at lower rates as the civic body has proposed to continue the present tax exemption.

For cinema halls having a seating capacity of 500 or more seats, the proposed entertainment tax would be Rs 250 per day, instead of the present tax of Rs 25 per show. For air-conditioned cinema halls, the entertainment tax would be Rs 350 per day instead of the present tax of Rs 25 per show.

The proposal states that for plays staged in auditoriums, the entertainment tax per show would be increased from Rs50 to Rs100. Similarly, the tax for circus shows would be increased from Rs 50 to Rs 100. For tamasha shows, the tax is proposed to be increased from Rs 20 to Rs 100. Even for musical events or programmes, the tax is proposed to be increased from Rs 50 per show to Rs 100.

While no hike has been proposed for wrestling events, for other sports events, the tax is proposed to be increased from Rs 50 per day to Rs 100 per day.

The proposal will finalised by the general body. The proposals will come into effect from April 1, 2011. The draft budget for 2011-12 will be presented by civic chief Ashish Sharma in February.
