A father allegedly slit the throat of his five-year-old daughter in a fit of rage in Pune district yesterday. Police said the accused, whose name has not been revealed, got angry at his daughter for asking him to take her to her mother, who was working at a nearby farm.
"In a fit of anger, the accused, who is also an alcoholic, dragged her outside the house and slit her throat using a sharp weapon," an officer at Indapur police station said.
The officer said the man was arrested after a woman who lives in the same area saw the alleged murder. The man and his wife are labourers.
"He is addicted to alcohol due to which the couple used to fight regularly. He often asked for money from his wife for liquor," the police officer said. "The accused wanted to have liquor and he called up his wife for money. At the time when his wife refused to give money, his daughter also started crying, insisting that he take her to her mother," the officer said.
Police said the accused, who was already angry, got annoyed so much that he dragged the girl for some 150 metres and killed her.
A woman who saw him killing his daughter then called for help and contacted the police. A case has been filed and investigation is on, police said.
