Pune:
The city unit president of the Shiv Sena, Nilesh Chavan (34), committed suicide at his house in the wee hours of Wednesday by shooting himself. He is survived by his parents, brother, wife and two children.
The incident sent shock waves in the local political fraternity, especially the Sena camp. The reason for his suicide is not yet known. The police have found a revolver, five live bullets and one used bullet from his house.
The district guardian minister, Chhagan Bhujbal, rushed from Nagpur to attend his funeral, which took place in the evening. Shiv Sena leaders from Mumbai, Arvind Sawant and Suryakant Mahadik, paid homage on behalf of senior party leaders.
Sena sources said that after having dinner on Tuesday Nilesh talked with his family, wife and children before going to sleep. His wife was awakened by the gunshot around 2 am and she found her husband lying in a pool of blood in the hall. He died while being taken to Wockhardt Hospital.
Hailing from Vinchur, a small village in Nashik, Nilesh cleared his state public service commission examination and took up a government job. Later he quit the job and joined politics.
He initially joined the Congress and, along with Rahul Gandhi, worked in Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. But with differences with a section of the local senior party leadership, he quit the party and started concentrating on his business.
He was spotted by Shiv Sena executive president, Uddhav Thackeray, and entrusted the responsibility of Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena. Thackeray later appointed him city unit chief of the party.
