Now, mission against superstition takes off

Pune: The Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti (Mans) is on a mission to revive the memories and work of great social reformers in the state and promote the scientific spirit among people. Two teams set off on their 50-day mission from Mahatma Phule Wada on Wednesday.

They plan to visit all 35 districts in the state, reaching out to college students in the hope of enrolling 2,000 new members to strengthen its work against superstition.

During the campaign, 200 units of Mans will take up 1,000 programmes to project the thoughts of the reformers. The programmes will include quiz, road shows, poster exhibitions and sale of literature.

December 31 will be celebrated as a day against addiction. Couples with inter-caste marriages will be felicitated. A memorandum with 20,000 signatures protesting against programmes on the electronic media encouraging superstitions will be presented to the government.

Mans has threatened to file a petition if the government does not take measures to refrain the media from spreading superstitions.

Mans founder-president, Narendra Dabholkar; social activists Razia Patel and Baba Adhav flagged off the campaign in Pune.
