Plastic bags converted into fuel

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started treating plastic carrybags on a pilot basis at the Peshwe Energy Park near Sarasbaug. It is planning to erect more such plants in the city.

Solid waste management head of the PMC, Suresh Jagtap, said the civic body has successfully started processing plastic and other non-biodegradable elements at the plant. The PMC started the plant at Peshwe Park with the help of Greenleaf Renewal Energy Pvt Ltd.

Jagtap and local corporator, Manisha Ghate said, "This plant has given an easy solution for the ever increasing amount of plastic waste."

Directors of Greenleaf Renewal Energy, Sumedh Bapat and Srinivas Kusula, told DNA that the new technology of converting waste plastic to fuel is helpful for the city. Though there is a ban on plastic carrybags in the city, they are found in most garbage bins.

"The PMC asked us to develop a process to address the plastic waste problem. Greenleaf worked on it and set up the plant, which has the capacity to treat 50 kg plastic every three hours and produce 25 litres of fuel," Bapat said. The company will pay the rag pickers and collect the plastic bags from them.

Jagtap said the PMC is planning to increase the number of such plants to address the problem of plastic waste in the city. The proposal for extending the number of plants is not ready, but the PMC will plan for it and take the approval of the standing committee.
