Pune: To hit back at his wife for not acceding to his dowry demands, an engineer allegedly created an obscene profile of hers on social networking sites based on a popular porn comic strip. He allegedly called it Shobha Aunty and listed his wife's contact details on it.
The Pune police booked the 30-year-old woman's husband and her in-laws for harassment. In her complaint, the victim stated that she was treated badly for refusing to bring jewellery and money from her parents. The police are yet to make any arrests in the case since the suspect and his family are out of station.
The complainant married to Nikhil Uttekar (32), a mechanical engineer, in May 2009.
Tejaswini Yadav, police sub-inspector with Sahakarnagar police station and the investigating officer in the case, said that the complainant lost her job after a few months of marriage.
Subsequently, her husband and her in-laws allegedly started harassing her to bring money and jewellery from her parents.
Around May this year, Nikhil allegedly created a fake and obscene profile called Shobha Aunty on Orkut and Facebook and provided his wife's cell number on them.
In a bid to popularise the page, he sent messages to many contacts in the social networking sites by giving links to the profile pages.
Within few days, the complainant started getting calls from many people with obscene demands.
"The complainant suffered a lot because of these calls," said Yadav. "The suspect also published fake information about the victim and said she was separated from her husband."
When she told her husband about the calls, he accused her of infidelity and told her that the calls might be from men she meets when she visits her parents. Fed up, she went to live with her parents in October.
Subsequently she filed a case with the Sahakarnagar police station. According to Yadav, they found out that her husband was involved in the creation of the obscene profile. Nikhil, his father Prakash (63) and mother (60) have been charged under section 498 (a) of Indian Penal Code for subjecting her to cruelty and 406 for criminal breach of trust.
The police said that though the obscene profile pages do not exist anymore, they have evidence of their existence in the past. After verifying their IP addresses the accused will be booked under the provisions of Information Technology Act.
