Pune surgeons give teenager a second life

Pune: Arvind (16), a resident of Chinchwad, collapsed on the couch while watching television. On being taken to the hospital, he was diagnosed as suffering from a rare congenital heart disease.

Before collapsing Arvind had complained of breathlessness and abdominal pain. He even vomited. The boy, who experienced the attack for the first time, was rushed to Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, where it was detected that he was suffering from a congenital heart disorder that reversed the blood flow and led to the attack.

The teenager suffered from a condition where the aortic valve of the heart leaks, causing blood to flow in the reverse direction from the aorta to the left ventricle, said Dr Sanjeev Jadhav, senior cardiac surgeon of the hospital.

"We found that the heart valve of the patient had only two leaflets, instead of three. The aneurysm (widening of an artery, vein or the heart) ruptured suddenly and the blood started flowing from the left side of the heart to the right, mixing the oxygenated blood with the de-oxygenated blood. The leaking aortic valve made the clinical conditions worse, leading to multi-organ failure," Jadhav added.

According to him, the teenager would have lost his life due to the attack if the condition had gone unnoticed. After diagnosis and examination, Arvind was operated upon for the condition and the heart valve replaced by a mechanical one. His kidneys and liver were also operated upon.
