Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC today informed the Bombay High Court that it has removed more than 5,000 illegal hoardings from the city in a day-long drive yesterday. Over 10,000 hoardings were removed from the rest of Maharashtra.
The high court had on Wednesday directed all municipalities in Maharashtra to remove illegal hoardings within a day, failing which the municipal commissioners would face action. Many of these hoardings are put up by political parties and their leaders.
The court directed the civic bodies to issue notices to people whose names or photos were on
billboards.
The high court today praised the efforts of the civic bodies and said it was also the police's job to ensure that hoardings don't come up illegally.
The drive was carried out yesterday in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and other cities. Additional staff equipped with extra machinery were put on the job.
Mumbai Mayor Sunil Prabhu told NDTV, "This would have happened earlier. But now the high court has said, so the political parties have to keep Mumbai clean and green."
