University of Pune students complain of poor infrastructure

Pune: On the second day of its visit to the University of Pune (UoP) on Tuesday, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (Naac) team interacted with the students, apart from visiting various departments. The students were asked by the team to rate the university and gave a verdict of between 8 and 9 points out of 10.

According to the sources, parents were not allowed to take part in the interaction with the Naac team. The students were frank and said the teaching faculty is the best, but there are some infrastructural problems that need to be addressed urgently.

Poor canteen facilities were the focus of discussions. A few months ago, the students agitated against the high food prices in the four canteens on the campus. The students want the canteen facilities to be improved.

The hostel students rued the inadequate water supply and poor toilet facilities. The ladies said their hostel has inadequate water supply and no hot water supply in winter. The students also demanded extension of working hours of the library.

The internal transportation for outstation students was another point of discussion in the one-hour session, which was held at the UoP's department of management sciences auditorium.

The foreign students said administrative work should be speeded up and the process simplified. There is a counselling cell at the university, but a grievances cell needs to be set up, they felt.

The students were unhappy with the long queues for paying fees. The students said the wi-fi facility is not functioning at all places, to which the Naac team said it is the responsibility of the departments to provide the right connection.

The team visited the Educational Media Research Centre and the departments of philosophy, psychology, history, communication and journalism, among others. At the journalism department, the Naac team noted the poor canteen facility. However, the students said, "We are happy with the canteen." Apparently, the department has an old canteen.
