13 arrested after clashes in Rameswaram; police fire in air

Rameswaram: The police opened fire in the air today to put an end to a clash between two groups in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram (or Rameswaram) district. The clashes began after one of the groups lost a cricket match. Thirteen people have been arrested.

According to the police, the group who lost the match started pelting stones, injuring 10 people and damaging a police checkpost. Two policemen, including a sub-inspector, suffered serious injuries in the incident.

The two groups even drew petrol from the parked vehicles and hurled petrol bombs at each other.

The cops said they fired two rounds in the air to warn the clashing groups after lathicharge failed to yield result. Police said the situation was under control.
