2 News Channels Blacked Out in Karnataka

Bengaluru: Two news channels in Karnataka - TV9 and NEWS9 - have been taken off the air in many areas of the state by cable operators since Monday evening.

The channels claim they were blacked out after a directive issued by the state's energy minister DK Shivakumar just before an expose was to be aired.

The expose allegedly targeted some state minister in chief minister Siddaramaiah's government.

"The action of the cable operators emanates from a meeting between them and Karnataka minister for Energy DK Shivakumar a few days ago, at which the minister ordered them to stop telecasting TV9 and NEWS9... He threatened them that the government will impose heavy penalties on them if they did not stop telecasting TV9 and NEWS9," said a press release from NEWS9.
