Tamil Nadu:
A 25-year-old wild elephant was killed in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris on Sunday, after it came into contact with an illegally installed electric fence in the Chokkanalli tribal settlement.
Authorities have arrested one person in connection with the incident. The person had reportedly installed the fence around his plantation using regular power supply to keep wild animals at bay.
"They have powered the fence by drawing electricity from their house. This is illegal," said Prem Kumar, Assistant Conservator of Forest.
The incident, ironically, comes at a time when the state government is organising rejuvenation camps for temple elephants and elephants under the care of the forest department.
