Rameswaram:
In the second such seizure within a week, 70 kg of sea cucumber, an endangered marine species, was recovered on Thursday, forest officials said.
Forest officials on routine duty at Devipattinam spotted a group of people standing beside a motorcycle. On seeing the officials, the men ran away, leaving the sea cucumber and motorcyle.
The sea cucumber was meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka, officials said.
On April 12, 150 kg of sea cucumber was seized from a house here.
Though trade in sea cucumber is banned, it is smuggled in large quantity to Indonesia, Japan and Sri Lanka where it is used for its medicinal properties.
