Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa made a rare public appearance on Sunday in her RK Nagar constituency in Chennai to launch projects and welfare schemes worth Rs 180 crore. This is a few days after the DMK posted an ad in newspapers and social media which read - "Have you seen the Chief Minister in person?"
The ads and memes further read - "You may have seen the Chief Minister on stickers, banners and even on TV".
Ms Jayalalithaa had earlier introduced the practice of launching programmes via video conferencing. She has largely avoided attending government functions ever since her return to power following her acquittal in a case of disproportionate assets. Even the swearing in ceremony of her cabinet was fast tracked with ministers taking a combined oath in a departure from protocol.
The chief minister did not even visit any flood-affected areas in Chennai for a long time for which she was slammed by the Opposition. Even then, she confined to her van during her visits.
To this change in Chief Minister's approach, DMK Treasurer M K Stalin, also the brain behind the campaign said, "Her personal visit now is an indication that Jayalalithaa has realised that video conferencing rule is coming to an end."
