Angry AIADMK supporters forced shops to close.
Chennai: Violence broke out in several parts of Tamil Nadu today after Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was found guilty of corruption in a Bangalore court.

Angry supporters of the chief minister and her party, the AIADMK, forced shops to close in some parts of the state and burnt effigies of the top leaders of the DMK, which pursued the case that led to today's conviction.

In Chennai, the one-kilometre stretch between Ms Jayalalithaa's residence and that of DMK chief M Karunanidhi was particularly tense, with supporters of both political heavyweights lined up in large numbers.

A state-owned bus was set on fire at Veppur village and some 20 buses were vandalized  in the Cuddalore district, police said.

Protesters also damaged two-wheelers parked alongside roads in Madurai, they said.

Security personnel in large numbers have been posted to maintain law and order, police said.
