Andhra Pradesh train tragedy: death toll rises to nine

A speeding train on Saturday evening ran over people at Gotlam railway station near Vizianagaram town

Visakhapatnam: The death toll of the November 2 train mishap at Gotlam village in Vizianagaram district rose to nine, after one more body was found and identified today.

Government Railway Police (GRP) identified the ninth and last dead body, which was badly mutilated after a fast passenger train ran over those while crossing the track at Gotlam East Cabin area in Vizianagaram town under Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway on Saturday evening.

Vijayawada GRP Superintendent of Police Syam Prasad said that the body identified was of Abishek Kumar (29), a software engineer at Bengaluru, who had boarded the S1 coach of the Alappuzha-Dhanbad-Bokaro Express train at Chennai Central railway station to reach his home town Muzzafarpur in Bihar to celebrate Diwali with his family.

Based on the reserved passengers' list in S1, S2 and S3 compartments of the train, the GRP found contact numbers of their relatives and sent SMSes to their relatives to check if all passengers reached their destination or not.

"We got a phone call from one Ajay Kumar, that his son, who had boarded the Bokaro Express did not reach home.

Later, Ajay Kumar came to city in a flight to city. A ring with a specific design on his left finger helped us identify the body" Syam Prasad said.
