The gruesome incident in which Keerti Revati, a 10th standard girl, was set afire by a man who had been harassing her for some time in Pithapuram town in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday evoked vociferous protests from the student community.
Students staged demonstrations in Kakinada and in Pithapuram, demanding that the accused be hanged.
All the students of AS Government College for Women in Kakinada boycotted their classes and took out a procession to the collector's office.
In Pithapuram, students of Badam Madhavarao ZP High School formed a human chain at the town centre.
Meanwhile, the condition of the girl, who received about 80 per cent burns, is still critical, doctors said in Kakinada.
The accused, Navin, was produced before the court on Thursday, which remanded him in 14-day custody.
