Kochi:
Observing that standards of higher education had fallen, Kerala High court on Thursday directed the state government to consider closing down self-financing engineering colleges whose pass percentage was less than 40 in the last 3 years.
The direction was issued by a division bench comprising justice C N Ramachandran Nair and Justice Babu Mathew P Joseph after verifying the result of engineering colleges under four universities in the state.
Court had earlier appointed an expert committee to study the quality of education imparted in the self-financing engineering colleges.
After examining the committee's report, the bench held that it would be desirable to close down engineering colleges having pass percentage of less than 40 and students of these colleges can be accommodated in other colleges.
The government should consider closure of these colleges after examining the pass percentage of the last 3 years, the court said.
The bench also directed the government to publish on the website the pass percentage of students in the past three years to facilitate selection of colleges by students and their parents.
Earlier, while considering the approval of Ernakulathapan Engineering College in Thrissur, the bench had suo motu initiated proceedings to evaluate the standards of engineering colleges under different universities in the state.
