Bangalore:
The Karnataka High Court has granted conditional bail to the BJP MLA Y Sampangi, on a criminal appeal filed by him, seeking quashing of the recent conviction and sentence by the Lokayukta Court.
Allowing the criminal appeal filed by Mr Sampangi, Justice V Jagannathan granted him bail after he gave a personal bond of Rs one lakh and two sureties.
The Court also directed Mr Sampangi to be present whenever called upon and not to leave the country without the Court's permission.
The MLA who is presently lodged in jail is likely to be released tomorrow after the completion of formalities.
On June 2, the Lokayukta Court Judge NK Sudhindra Rao had convicted and sentenced Mr Sampangi to three and a half years of Rigorous Imprisonment and slapped with Rs 1 lakh fine, besides ordering extension of the RI by six more months in case he failed to pay up.
Mr Sampangi, who represents the KGF assembly constituency, was caught red-handed by the Lokayukta police on January 29, 2009 while accepting Rs 50000 in cash and Rs 4.5 lakh by cheque from a businessman Farooq, for settling a civil dispute.
