Bus fares to go up in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: Bus fares in Kerala will go up with immediate affect by Rs 1 to Rs 5, with the state government today approving the hike in minimum fares, depending on the class of the bus.

The decision was taken based on the recommendations of the Justice Ramachandran Commission, which looked into the matter, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters after a Cabinet meeting in the capital Thiruvananthapuram.

Besides the minimum charges, the minimum fare per km has also been raised. For ordinary city and town services, the minimum charge has been raised from Rs 5 to Rs 6, fast passenger from Rs 7 to Rs 8, superfast from Rs 10 to Rs 12, Super Express froom Rs 15 to Rs 17, Super Delux Rs 20 to Rs 25 and Volvo Air Conditioner from Rs 30 to Rs 35.

Students concession fare has also been raised by 50 paise to Rs 1.

The new bus fare would come into force with imediate after the government issue necessary order in this regard, Mr Chandy said.
