Kannur: A Congress MP from Kerala has been caught on camera threatening a cop while demanding the release of a party functionary arrested over his alleged role in connection with a case of sand smuggling.
K Sudhakaran, a Lok Sabha member from Kannur, barged into the Valapattinam police station on Wednesday alongwith his party workers, asking for Azhikode block Youth Congress president Ragesh to be freed. During this time, the MP picked up an argument with the police officials present there. As television cameras captured the ruckus, the legislator was seen shouting at the sub-inspector of the police station. He was even heard telling the cop that the latter would be out of his job in no time.
Mr Sudhakaran was later taken into custody and has been booked on charges of threatening a police officer and obstructing the functioning of police officials.
In 2009, he was in the news for similar reasons as he held a 13-hour-long dharna outside a police station.
Congress leaders, in the meanwhile, have remained tight-lipped over the matter.
The incident comes less than a month after a Congress MP from Porbandar in Gujarat, Vitthal Radadiya, was caught on camera pulling out a gun, brandishing it and threatening employees at a toll plaza near Vadorara. The MP refused to apologise, justifying his action by saying he acted in self defence, although no other person was seen anywhere near him on camera for most part. The Gujarat High Court had recently slammed the lawmaker, terming the incident as "unfortunate".
