New Delhi:
Supreme Court will today hear Tamil Nadu's petition for immediate release of the water of River Cauvery from Karnataka.
After a suggestion by the top court to sort out the issue, Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka met on November 29 at Bengalaru. But the less-than-an-hour meeting appeared to widen the wedge between the two states, taking the case back to the Supreme Court.
Tamil Nadu wants a minimum of 30 TMC water for the next 15 days to save the standing crops. It says the shortage of water has led to the suicide of farmers in the state and some solution was urgently needed. Karnataka, however, says it can't release any more water because of drought and less water in their reservoirs.
During the last hearing on November 26, the court had asked the chief ministers of the two states to meet and arrive at an amicable solution to the "sensitive" Cauvery water dispute.
The court had said that it is not always possible for the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) headed by the Prime Minister to meet, so the state governments should meet to find a solution.
On Friday, the court at one stage said since the dialogue between the Chief Ministers has failed, the CRA must intervene now.
