Chennai:
A fire broke out in the luggage compartment (brake van) of the Chennai-Alappuzha Express this morning. It was however immediately extinguished and all passengers are safe.
According to reports, soon after the train crossed Erode, a guard detected smoke and alerted the next station. The train was then stopped at Perundurai where fire fighters extinguished the blaze.
Rail traffic has been affected on the Salem-Coimbatore section. Authorities say normal traffic is expected to resume in a couple of hours.
