Chennai: It is the venue of the biggest music and dance concerts in Chennai. The Music Academy, one of the city's oldest landmarks, now boasts of a new distinction. Tumkur University has granted the 84 year old institution the status of a research centre.
For over eight decades, the internationally acclaimed organisation has been preserving and promoting Carnatic Music. The Academy has a library with more than 5000 books, 30 publications and digital archives with resources to further digitise close to twenty thousand hours of music to its collection.
A few years ago, it started an advanced school of Carnatic music, offering a 3 year diploma course with eminent musicians as faculty members.
An elated President of the Academy N Murali has announced that "researchers can enroll here for PhD programmes under the guidance of stalwarts."
