Bangalore:
The helicopter that made an emergency landing on the roof of a residential building in Bangalore yesterday is now being dismantled after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation or DGCA assessed the situation.
Parts of the helicopter are being lowered to the ground with the help of a crane.
On Thursday, a trainee pilot of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) made an emergency landing on top of Maitri Apartments in Bangalore.
The white helicopter landed on the top of a building, Maitri Apartments in the Byapanahalli area in North East Bangalore at 4:30 pm. The pilot and co-pilots were safe. They were taken to hospital for a check-up and for confirmation that all was well.
"When there is an emergency, there is a list of actions that you have to take. You do them and I did that. When the engine fails, the helicopter comes down. And you have to choose the best possible place where it is going. It was the only possible option in that area," said Rodj Assey, the pilot of the helicopter.
Investigations are on to ascertain why the pilots landed the chopper on the apartment roof instead of a regular airstrip; the busy residential area is close to the old Bangalore airport which is now used by HAL. The helicopter had taken off from there.
The police said there was minor damage to the rotor blades of the helicopter.
Curious residents had crowded the rooftops of adjoining buildings and were out on the streets, shocked to see a helicopter on the roof of a residential building. There was heavy police presence as well.
