Coastal Andhra Pradesh on alert after heavy rains

Rajahmundry: Alert has been issued after heavy rains lashed East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh since yesterday.

"The district administration has issued an alert and taking all precautionary measures, including shifting people from low-lying areas to safer places, monitoring the water level at irrigation sources," an official said.

Rajahmundry city witnessed heavy rains last night due to the low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal.

Crop was damaged in Kajuluru Mandal in the district due to heavy downpour, the official said.

The Visakhapatnam weather office has predicted heavy rainfall in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema and rains in Telangana due depression formed in the Bay of Bengal.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

Meanwhile, SpiceJet and Jet Airways today suspended one flight each to Hyderabad from the Rajahmundry airport due the inclement weather conditions in the district, an airport official said.
