Erode:
The marriage of a seventh standard student scheduled for today at a village near Sathiyamangalam in the district was stopped on the timely intervention of the District Collector, officials said.
They said a farmer had arranged for his 22-year-old son to get married to the 15-year-old daughter of his close relative on June 6 at Periyur. However the Collector, who was informed of it, visited the parents' homes and warned them against conducting the marriage, following which it was stopped.
The families however again arranged for the marriage today following which some persons tipped off Collector V K Ahanmugham, who immediately ordered revenue officials to visit the place and stop the marriage, officials said.
The officials visited both homes and obtained a written statement from them that the girl would not be married off until she attained the legal age of 18 years, they said.
Revenue and police officials were deputed at the area this morning to watch the situation, officials said.
