Court stays inquiry in police officers' feud case

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has stayed the order of inquiry into the allegations made by Director General of Police (DGP) V Dinesh Reddy and senior Indian Police Services (IPS) officer Umesh Kumar against each other.

The division bench of Justices G Chandraiah and N Ravi Shankar on Wednesday gave the stay against the single bench order while admitting appeals filed by Mr Reddy and CID Additional Director General, SV Ramana Murthy. The bench also stayed contempt of court proceedings against the DGP.

Last month, Justice Ramesh Ranganathan, while disposing of three petitions filed by Umesh Kumar, including one making serious allegations against the DGP regarding non-disclosure of acquisition of properties by his wife, had also directed the High Court Registrar to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against Dinesh Reddy and Ramana Murthy for suppression of material facts and filing a false affidavit.

Umesh Kumar had challenged registration of a criminal case by the state CID against him in a forgery case. Referring to the allegations by Dinesh Reddy and Umesh Kumar, Justice Ranganathan had observed that the two IPS officers had hurled serious charges of corruption, abuse of power against each other, and directed the Chief Secretary to appoint a senior IAS/IPS officer, senior to both, to look into the charges and submit a report to the state government.

Dinesh Reddy willfully misled the High Court while suppressing certain material facts pertaining to amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income, the judge had said.

The CID last year booked Mr Umesh Kumar in a criminal case pertaining to alleged forgery of a letter, on the basis of which Kumar had earlier levelled some allegations against the DGP.
