Hyderabad : CPI on Tuesday demanded that the Andhra Pradesh Government convene an all-party meeting to discuss the row over releasing irrigation water to Krishna and other districts.
The controversy began after TRS objected to the release of water from Nagarjuna Sagar dam, which is at a low level, to the 'Krishna delta' - districts of Krishna and Guntur, among others, in coastal Andhra - on the ground that it would deprive Hyderabad and some Telangana districts of even water to drink.
Congress Rajya Sabha member Palvai Govardhan Reddy, who hails from Telangana, had also opposed the release of water to the Krishna delta.
However, State Ministers from coastal Andhra Pradesh said the water was released as per the convention to save crops in hundreds of acres.
In another angle to the issue, Ministers and Congress leaders from Rayalaseema said their region should not be deprived of water and demanded that its interests be protected.
CPI State Secretary K Narayana said it is "necessary to give irrigation water for Krishna delta and also drinking water for Hyderabad, Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy districts.
The Government should immediately convene an all-party meeting to discuss the "sensitive" issue, he added.
