Chennai: Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) legislator R Annadurai on Monday raised concerns in the Tamil Nadu Assembly over nuclear safety in the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) complex and opposed its expansion, citing the Fukushima disaster in Japan.
Speaking on the grant for energy department, Annadurai said installing the third and fourth units in the same campus might turn out to be dangerous when seen in the backdrop of the nuclear accident in Fukushima of Japan.
Locating more than two units at the same place might spell danger, he added.
He suggested that the Tamil Nadu Government hold talks with the Centre in installing these units in some other safe location.
CPI member Arumugam urged the government to press the Centre to allot the entire power generation in all the units of Kudankulam Plant to the state itself.
KNPP at present has one commissioned 1000 MW Russian-made reactor and the work on the second unit was on. Two more units are planned to be set up at the KNPP, which continues to face protests by the locals citing safety concerns for the third year.
