Chennai:
DMK Chief M Karunanidhi today condemned his elder son and former Union Minister M K Alagiri for his views opposing any ties with the DMDK party for the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls. In an interview to a Tamil Satellite Channel Mr Alagiri had opposed any ties with actor Vijayakanth's DMDK.
Dissociating himself and the DMK from Mr Alagiri's views, in a statement Mr Karunanidhi said "Alagiri's views if true are not views of the DMK. Only the party's General Council or the Executive or the high command, when authorised can decide on alliance".
Mr Karunanidhi also warned of expulsion from party and strict action against anyone who disturbs or violates party discipline.
After snapping ties with the Congress there is speculation that the DMK is trying to rope in the DMDK to forge a strong alliance ahead of Lok Sabha polls. The DMDK had won 33 seats in alliance with the ruling AIADMK but soon severed ties with the ruling party. A few days ago the DMK Chief had said "I'd be happy if the alliance happens".
Over the last few years the DMK has witnessed the sibling rivalry between Mr Karunanidhi's two sons. According to party insiders, the younger son, MK Stalin is being groomed to be Mr Karunanidhi's heir. But the elder son too has time and again made it clear that after his father, he would contest party elections in a bid to succeed as DMK's President.
Just a few days ago the DMK High Command had disbanded the party's units in Mr Alagiri's bastion, Madurai citing indiscipline. All those office bearers who lost their party positions are loyalists of the Madurai strongman. The party also put in place an interim team which many say comprises of loyalists of Mr Stalin.
