Chennai:
Opposition DMK today demanded that the Tamil Nadu government announce relief to farmers in non-Delta districts on the lines of those which had been covered in the river Cauvery-fed regions.
DMK president M Karunanidhi said while Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had announced Rs 15,000 per acre as compensation for Cauvery delta farmers last month, it had however not covered those from non-Delta districts.
"What is the situation of those who had suffered crop-losses in districts other than the Cauvery delta? What is the outcome of a panel which had toured these areas to survey crop damage," he said in a statement in Chennai.
Further, farm labourers had demanded a compensation of Rs 10,000 and what was government's offer to those who could not raise crops due to lack of water, he asked.
Mr Karunanidhi said there were many pending demands from farmers, both in Cauvery delta districts and other places and hoped to see the government come up with a comprehensive package in the March 21 state budget.
