New Delhi: The DMK filed a petition in the Supreme Court today seeking monitoring of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's disproportionate assets case in Bangalore, accusing the AIADMK chief and her aide Ms Sasikala for derailing the trial proceedings.
Demanding a day-to-day trial, the petition claims that despite the court's order in 2003 for a speedy trial, both the accused are trying to delay the proceedings, which has reached its final stage. The petition is likely to be taken up for hearing on July 17.
Ms Jayalalithaa has been accused of misusing her earlier term in office from 1991 to 1996 to benefit herself and friends like Ms Sasikala.
The petition claims Ms Sasikala's demand to examine 15 year old documents is frivolous and an attempt to delay the trial.
The Supreme Court had transferred the trial from Chennai to Bangalore in November, 2003 on DMK's plea for a fair trial during Ms Jayalalithaa's tenure as chief minister.
Recently, the chief minister's aide Ms Sasikala approached Supreme Court to seek permission to examine some police documents for answering questions by a trial court. The top court declined to stay the trial, but adjourned the case to July 17.
