Chennai:
The government plans to implement drinking water projects estimated at more than Rs 1,500 crore which would benefit over 44 lakh people in 2012-13.
Making the announcements for his department in the assembly, Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development, KP Munusamy also said that the government would take up for proposal, six integrated drinking water schemes.
He said that the government would implement eight projects estimated at Rs 1527.63 crore in this financial year covering Cuddalore, Coimbatore, Tiurpur and Tirunelveli districts.
An additional Rs 700 crore would be spent on providing drinking water to areas coming under the expanded Chennai Corporation limits, he added.
Munusamy said 700 km of roads will be laid using plastic waste material and allocated Rs 63 crore for this purpose.
On implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, a Central scheme, he said government had allocated Rs 5000 crore for the year 2012-13 for a total of 37.90 crore human working days. This would result in wages of Rs 132 per day per person.
