Drunk man slashes grandson with blade

Kollam: Angry after a quarrel with his family members, a man slashed his two-and-a-half-year-old grandson's body with a shaving blade leaving him seriously injured.

Hospital authorities said Athul was brought to hospital on Sunday with blood dripping from all over his body due to injuries inflicted by his grandfather Krishnankutty.

The boy received as many as 40 stitches, they said. The 62-year-old man, who was reportedly inebriated, tortured the boy with blade when its mother went out to fetch drinking water. On her return, she saw the boy writhing in pain and raised an alarm. Sensing trouble, the old man fled the spot before the neighbours could gather, who then took Athul to a private hospital nearby.

Krishnakutty attacked the child in a fit of rage after a family quarrel and is absconding, the police said.

They said Krishnankutty used to frequently pick up quarrels with his son Raveendran. It is suspected that the old man attacked the child to vent his anger at his son.

Police said that a case has been registered against the old man under the Juvenile Protection Act.
