Eco clubs for 3,200 schools soon

Chennai: Aiming to spread environmental awareness among schoolchildren in the state, Tamil Nadu government on Friday announced expansion of the existing 'Eco Clubs' to 3,200 more schools in 2012-13.

According to the proposals for 2012-13, the government would set up eco clubs in 3200 government and government aided schools with 100 schools in each district, where the clubs would be set up at a total cost of Rs 80 lakh, it said.

There are presently over 8,000 units of National Green Corps and 1200 units of eco clubs in the state.

The government would also distribute laboratory kits with equipment worth Rs 2000 that would help understand soil, water and bio fuel.

A total of 1000 schools that already have eco clubs would benefit from this at a total cost of Rs 20 lakh.
