Elephant herd stands guard over calf injured by tiger in Tamil Nadu reserve

Udhgamandalam: A 15-day-old elephant calf was seriously injured after it was attacked by a tiger in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the district yesterday, forest department officials said.

Villagers noticed the bleeding calf lying on the ground with its mother standing guard and immediately informed department officials, who rushed to the spot.

As the mother elephant did not allow officials to come near the calf, some medicines were sprayed on it from a distance, they said.

The officials confirmed that the calf was attacked by a tiger as there were nail marks on its legs and abdomen and pug marks nearby.

Later, a herd of six to seven elephants also surrounded the calf forming a protective barrier, the officials said, adding they are considering treating it once the pachyderms move out of the area.
